Alimony or Spousal Support
Spousal support also referred to as alimony, is the financial support of one ex-spouse by the other, and is another issue to be explored in a divorce case. The Court looks at the relative needs of the parties, their abilities to pay alimony, the need for support, the length of the marriage and several other factors in deciding whether spousal support is appropriate and what the proper amount should be.
Spousal support can be short term or permanent. As with the division of property, there can be significant tax consequences. In each case, careful presentation of these factors ensures that the resolution of the Spousal support issue is fair.
